The Journey of SpillFix
The story of SpillFix started with a crazy idea: harnessing an abundant natural waste stream to clean up industrial waste. It’s an idea that actually worked and has dramatically changed how the world mitigates hazardous and non-hazardous spills.
Our founder, Joe Davids, developed this global solution thanks, in part, to his global perspective. Born in South Africa, Joe migrated to Australia as a young man. He worked in IT at the Australian Stock Exchange, but his heart was vested in helping solve the world’s environmental problems.
While traveling through Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka in the late 80s and early 90s, Joe was intrigued by the mountains of cast-off coconut husks generated by the coconut industry. (Each year, 75 billion coconuts are harvested worldwide.) Where others saw waste, Joe saw an abundant resource. He was particularly fascinated by the husks’ water-holding potential when his home country of Australia had been suffering from severe drought.
In 1991, Joe’s curiosity led to experimentation. Coir, an element of the coconut husk, proved to be an excellent absorbent. In looking for ways to transform this natural material into something useful, Joe considered the complex environmental issues of toxicity and wastefulness.
His novel solution: SpillFix. By taking the coconut industry’s abundant waste and repurposing it into a highly-effective industrial spill absorbent, SpillFix would become the only all-natural, non-toxic spill solution that solves two environmental problems with one product.
SpillFix was first introduced to the Australian market in 2003, where the Australian mining industry readily adopted it. In 2004, we introduced the product to the US through industrial distributors, where American coal mining and automotive sectors were also quick to recognize SpillFix’s advantages. SpillFix is now used by a variety of industries, commercial businesses, and households. It is sold in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Japan, England, Norway, EU, USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Over the past 20 years, after significant investments in research, development, and production we’ve created a truly effective product. We then developed smart, robust packaging to minimize waste. The start of our supply chain begins at the source of the waste stream in three East Asian countries. Thanks to SpillFix, coconut waste now provides fair wages, steady employment, improved health, and educational opportunities for the residents of these beautiful communities.
As a company, we continue to have a singular focus on waste and environmental stewardship, caring for people, and protecting the planet for future generations.
